They purchased a vibrant fruit, veggie and health food store and poured their hearts and soul into the business for 8 years. While running the store they realised that many of the health foods that they stocked were heavily packaged.
In May 2011 they extended the store to include a deli and juice bar and started selling bulk foods in this space. They stocked about 40 products in gravity bins and realised what a huge difference they could make if unpackaged foods were more readily available!
There are now over 30 The Source Bulk Foods stores operating throughout Australia. Each store stocking over 400 bulk whole foods including; nuts, seeds, grains, herbs, spices, cereals, flour, rice, paleo products, superfoods, honey, oils, confectionary, yummy snacks, cleaning products, personal care products and so much more.
We are lucky enough to have spent 5 minutes with Emma to get a sneak peek into what life is like for her.
Who is your family made up of?
Myself and my husband Paul, our two young boys Harley and Mason, our dog, a few fish and a couple of chooks.
What is a typical day with your family like?
We don’t have many typical days! During the week we do the mad school dash then come home and try and fit as much work as we can in those few short school hours!
I work from home for our business, on promotions, campaigns and product development. Paul looks after all our stores so is usually travelling the country checking on our stores, meeting suppliers, conducting training, looking for new store locations and driving the business forward.
On weekends and during the week when our youngest is not in day care, we like to get out and about and go on adventures. We always start the day with coffee and breakfast somewhere in Byron Bay and usually end up at the beach, with friends or bush walking.
We love good food and we spending time outdoors. Our kids are young so our time with them is extremely precious.
Even though running a fast growing business and juggling young kids is very challenging, we appreciate all the opportunities ahead of us and we love what we do.
It’s all a balancing act and we do a pretty good job of giving our business everything but also making sure we have lots of good quality family time.
Who is one person in your life you are thankful for and why?
I’m thankful for my husband. We have been together for over 20 years and he is my rock.
We weather all the storms together and try to look on the bright side of life, stay positive and ensure we always have the right intentions, whilst running our business with passion.
He is also a very involved, loving Dad and our boys absolutely adore him – I couldn’t be on this journey without him.
Where do you live and if we were to visit you what would you show us?
We live near Byron Bay. We moved from Sydney nearly 10 years ago and every single day we feel grateful to live in such a wonderfully creative, supportive and free thinking community. Not to mention it’s breathtakingly beautiful!
We love the simpler, genuine and slower pace of life here and the fact that family is more important than money and possessions for most people.
If you came to visit I’d have to take you to the birthplace of The Source Bulk Foods and show you our stores in Mullumbimby and Byron Bay.
I’d definitely take you to the beach and for a walk up to the Byron Lighthouse, then I’d treat you to a 7 course long lunch featuring the area’s amazing locally grown produce at Figtree Restaurant (my favorite!) overlooking the Byron Hinterland.
What is your greatest talent or ability?
I’m a great listener. I love to hear other people’s stories. I’m also a naturally happy and positive person so I’d like to think that I can make people feel comfortable, valued and happy.
Like any Mum I’m also a professional multi-tasker and a hard worker. Once I start something I can’t stop until I’m finished, regardless of the obstacles along the way!
If you had the attention of the world for just 10 seconds, what would you say?
At The Source we are on a serious mission to reduce waste so I’d use my time to speak about this issue. I’d tell everyone that there are 8 million tonnes of plastic rubbish going into the ocean every single year, ask them to really think about that figure and consider how appalling it is.
The planet is in dire need of help and I strongly believe in the power of one. Australians are the second biggest producers of waste in the world which is such a shame because we are people that love the outdoors and the beautiful country we live in.
The choices people make each day can have a huge impact. By buying food in bulk you can reduce tonnes of excessive packaging. For example, take your own reusable shopping bags and bring your own jars and containers to stores like ours to refill.
I’d also tell people to stop buying plastic water bottles because they are totally unnecessary and destroying our oceans.
We can turn this around! I’m excited about the changes I can see rippling with the zero waste movement and I hope stores like ours inspires others to shop more mindfully.
If you could have any superpower, which would you choose?
Oh gosh, that’s a hard one. I’d either want to fly because that would be pretty cool or I’d love the ability to give others superpowers because I reckon my sons would love to be superheroes for a day!
