Carolyn Ziegler grew up in Sydney in a business atmosphere with creative hard working parents that manufactured jewellery. After leaving school, Carolyn worked as a school teacher for more than 10 years.
After her first child was born, Carolyn joined her husband Tony in the creation of their business Dreambaby® developing a practical range of home safety solutions for infants and toddlers. “Along the way, I have learnt a lot! I have learnt about product packaging and printing from my first graphic designer (who is still working with me 18 years later) and love the creativity outlet it brings!” says Carolyn.
Carolyn is an avid walker and has recently taken up Pilates. Her family is her focus and the most important thing in the world to her. “My daughters are my focus even though they have their own lives now. Having to let go is a hard thing we have to learn as parents, but something that we must do.” says Carolyn
Carolyn is a lover of dogs, especially schnauzers. “I miss my three schnauzers, so no schnauzer anywhere in the world is safe if I am around. They will be talked to, and if the owner is willing, a hug will be given.” says Carolyn
We are lucky enough to have spent 5 minutes with Carolyn to get a sneak peek into what life is like for her.
Who is your family made up of?
My husband and daughters who are my world. My parents were also a huge part of my family and are still missed every day. My family also included my fabulous schnauzers (sadly gone, and I travel too much to have more pets at this time). They were always a calming influence and came with a special power that I think can only come from our 4 legged friends.
I would also say that our business is part of our family. My daughters have grown up with the business, as it was literally born when my husband and I became parents for the first time! We discovered first hand, the real need for a practical range of home safety solutions for infants and toddlers that helped keep our daughters safer but didn’t impact on their early childhood development.
What is a typical day with your family like?
I start the day with a walk or Pilates, before heading into the office. My daughters are now grown up but both work in the business so I see them more in the office than at home! Working at the helm of our business means my husband and I work long hours, emails come our way 24/7 so we are often, too often, on our computers or phones. In saying that I still love to catch up with friends for a quick lunch which adds a lot of balance to my busy life. On weekends, my days typically starts with a walk on Bondi Beach, then whatever the day brings, catching up on emails, shopping, relaxing, heading out for a yummy lunch at a favourite spot, seeing friends for dinner or catching a movie.
Who is one person in your life you are thankful for and why?
There are two people – my parents. They gave me an amazing grounding, lots of love and a definite level of respect for everything and everyone. They also taught me to be grateful for all I have. I truly believe my parents also gave me the confidence to create my own successful global brand.
Where do you live and if we were to visit you what would you show us?
I live in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. I have the ‘Carolyn’ tour of Sydney and do it often. Bondi Beach and the whole of Bondi, as well as Watson’s Bay, Sydney Harbour, including the Opera House, Bridge, the historical Rocks precinct and a visit to Manly by ferry, if we have time. That is the snapshot I love people to see. If time allows, I show visitors the Blue Mountains too.
What is your greatest talent or ability?
If you had the attention of the world for just 10 seconds, what would you say?
I feel like Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality – World Peace. The insanity of terrorism and countries not getting along is not where the world should be heading. We need to live in a world without such fears.
If you could have any superpower, which would you choose?
Flight. I travel by air, visiting trade shows, clients and manufacturers across the globe for our business, and at times it would be more efficient to have my own wings!
