A Greyhound Makes A Fantastic Family Pet
Bridie Jenner

I’d always wanted a greyhound and two years ago finally realised my dream. I happened to come across Greyhounds as Pets WA (GAP WA) - they rehome dogs that have either retired or are no good for racing, giving them a second chance as otherwise they’d be destroyed which a tragic waste.
Having a dog is a huge responsibility and with a one year old daughter, Katie, we wanted to ensure that her safety came first so breed of dog was very important. After speaking to Kerry at GAP at length about our possible adoption she reassured me that greyhounds are the best dog to have around children. They are completely docile in nature and, if provoked, would rather run away than attack. After being considered for two dogs which turned out to be unsuitable (we also had a cat to take into account and they weren’t cat friendly!) we finally adopted Molly, a two year old greyhound who had been raced but sustained a nasty injury to her back leg during one of only two outings and so retired at a very young age.
We’ve now had her two years and couldn’t be happier. Although our daughter is now three we have a young son, eight months, and Molly is fantastic with the kids, she likes nothing more than to chase gumnuts that Katie throws for her. She’s never once growled, barked or been aggressive towards any of us, spends most of the day asleep and is the most loving dog you could wish for.
There are plenty of greyhounds out there, each state has a GAP of their own, so if you’ve got kids and are considering getting a dog please give serious thought to adopting a greyhound – you won’t be disappointed.
Originally from the UK and now living in Leschenault, WA with her husband and two young children, Katie (3) and Adam (8 months) plus a cat and, of course, Molly (3 ½).
