Rafting with my Cub Scout group
My name is Mark and I am 8years old. I have just been linked up from Joey Scouts to Cub Scouts because I turned 8 years old on the last day of the year – New Years Eve!! I go to Camden Park Scout Group in South Australia and have lots of friends there.
On Monday 28th February 2011 I met my cub group down at the Water Activity Centre down at Glenelg. We had to make rafts out of pipes and big plastic drums. Our leaders helped and some parents helped too. We had to make sure they were tied together tight so we did not drown. When the rafts were built we had to carry them down a ramp to the river. We had to wear life jackets in case we fell in and they had a strap that went between our legs so they could not float off.
There were 3 of my friends on my raft and one adult. The adult was on the front and a bit heavy so he was nearly sitting in the water, which was very funny. I sat up on the drum at the back and was high out of the water. We had to paddle to move our rafts and had races against the other 2 rafts. One raft fell apart and everyone fell in the water and it my group laughed. My drum was coming loose and I ended up falling off and had to hold on to the raft until I could climb back on. I thought it was fun hanging on and was not scared. One of the leaders saved my paddle for me because it was floating away.
At the end everyone jumped in the water and we all splashed around. My mum took lots of photos and I took them on a USB stick to school to show my class. My principal, Mrs Z., wanted to see them too. I took the USB into her office one morning before school and showed her all the photos. She saw how we built the rafts and then how we paddled them. She told me she thinks everyone should do scouts as it is a good thing to do. I love being a Cub Scout and I loved rafting. It is so much fun and I get to spend time with my friends doing new things.
